Age of War

Age of war is the oldest browser game I could remember playing and it was awesome. But now a decade later I played it again to review it and I have to admit it is still awesome. But mainly due to the fact that the nostalgia feeling is to xxxx high. Still while playing it i found out that it is one of the best balanced strategy browser games of its kind.

But to start from the bottom Age of war is 2D, base strategy browser game where the aim is to recruit enough soldiers to destroy the enemy base on the other side of the map. To do this the player can chose between melee fighters, range units and tank type units. Throughout the game the ages change and while the player is fighting on dinosaurs and knights in the first part of the game in the later ages tanks and supersonic warrior take control over the battlefield. To give the player at least something to do apart from clicking the solider buttons, also special abilities are present which again change over time from an erupting volcano to an airstrike.

The most positive aspect of the game is the great balancing. Only the last turrets are a bit overpowered and the computer almost never uses them, but may be that was necessary otherwise the game could continue for ages.

Another good part of the game is the different ages that get some variety going but do not change a lot about the tactical shallowness of the game. The only real thing the player has to decide is in what order he is placing his units and when to use the special ability (who recharges over time). All two decision are no brain killer as one melee fighter and according to the range about 3-4 ranged units mostly do the trick and the computer players often starts spawning tanks at the end of each age so the timing of the special ability is also not difficult to get right. With this tactic it is very easily possible to win the game after about 3 ages as the musket man of the 3rd age is also a bit overpower. That takes away credit from the great balancing (but not a too great amount).

All together it is a nicely designed lame strategy game which can give about 1 hour of solid fun for newcomers. After that it is only good to be replayed after 10 years and remember the good times.
