Sadly the good balancing of the first part did not make it into the second part. All different difficulties can be won in about 4-5 ages. And it is not the point of balancing to give the computer players more resources and XP points. Better would have been to teach the computer players the key mechanics of the game like the upgrading system, the tank/anti-tank situation and the evolving mechanic.
The upgrade system is an excellent new addition as it gives the game greatly needed depth in the tactical segment of the game. From now on the player can decide if he concentrates on melee or ranged units or if he wants to defend with tank and antitank units. The problem is the same as stated above, someone forget to tell the computer player that the upgrading system exists. So after 2 ages it already gets pretty useless as your a bit upgraded units are already a lot better than the computer players soldiers.
The special abilities are now costing XP and are also available for the computer player what is a in theory good addition. In real it is quite a disadvantageous to use the special ability as it is more advantageous to get to the next age faster than the opponent. The special ability only works as a last minute strike when the enemy is already on the gates and you have no money to build new units and turrets. But to be honest that does not really happen only if you fall asleep for 5 minutes.
All together age of war 2 has nothing more to give the player than the first part. It is only a graphically more advanced game with some attempts made to give it more tactical depth which do not work at all except the new upgrading system. Again it is good for about 1 hour of fun for the new comers other than that it gets his charm out of nostalgic feeling.
